Baseball Card Storage Tips and Information

Below are pictures and information about some of the products that I use to protect my baseball cards when they're in storage. Most of the cards that I collect are nearly 100 year old T206 baseball cards so it's important that I preserve them as best as possible. These storage tips are based on my first hand experience gained from years of collecting baseball cards.

Soft Protective Sleeves for Baseball Card Storage

Sleeves - These protective sleeves are PVC free and contain a UV inhibitor to help protect the color against damage from ultraviolet light. Protective sleeves are important to protect the surface of your cards from scuffs and scratches, especially the newer baseball cards with high gloss finishes and game used memorabilia.

Rigid Toploaders to Protect Baseball Cards from Bending

Toploaders - Toploaders are rigid cases that prevent the creasing and warping of your baseball cards. This includes protection against creasing and corner ware. Smaller cards like T206s and some of the newer card sets that emulate that size are subject to movement once inside the toploader which can cause surface ware so you'll still need to be careful. Be sure to use sleeves as well, especially with these smaller baseball cards. I use sleeves and toploaders for the storage of all my favorite baseball cards and recommend using them for any cards that you'll want to display.

Corrugated Storage Boxes that Hold Baseball Card Toploaders

Corrugated Boxes - Storage boxes are available in sizes that accommodate standard 3"x4" baseball cards, toploaders and PSA graded. The corrugated cardboard helps protect against damage that can occur from movement such as dropping or transport. Some people prefer plastic boxes which are more rigid but I believe the cushioning from the corrugation provides better protection for your card collection.

Air Tight Storage Crate to Protect Baseball Cards

Storage Crates - This is an air tight storage case that has a rubber seal and clamps shut from both sides. This will help to protect your cards from humidity and temperature changes. I wouldn't submerge these in water with my T206 cards inside but I think this offers great protection under normal conditions.

I've found that storing my best baseball cards in sleeves, toploaders, corrugated storage boxes and air tight storage crates helps me to sleep at night. I usually just store common cards in corrugated boxes and the air tight crates.
